چکیده

The assessment of brain stem function in comatose patients is now regular medical practice world wide. When envisaging a diagnosis of brain stem death it is essential, firstly, to establish that the patient is suffering from irremediable structural brain damage of known cause, and, secondly, to exclude the primary or contributory role of reversible causes of apnoeic coma with absent brain stem reflexes. Such causes include drug intoxication, hypothermia, and metabolic and endocrine disturbances. Brain stem encephalitis (Bickerstaff's encephalitis, Miller Fisher syndrome) is characterised by acute ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and areflexia.47 In unusually severe cases the patient may be comatose and apnoeic and there may be complete paralysis of the motor functions of the cranial nerves.6 We describe three patients with this condition in whom brain stem areflexia was associated with apnoeic coma. None of them met the first precondition for a diagnosis ofbrain stem death, emphasising the importance of the necessary preconditions for making such a

A pediatric case of Bickerstaff's brainstem encephalitis

Bickerstaff's brainstem encephalitis is characterized by ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and disturbance of consciousness. It is similar to Miller Fisher syndrome, a variant of Guillain-Barre syndrome, in that they share features such as ophthalmoplegia and ataxia. The difference is that patients with Bickerstaff's brainstem encephalitis have impaired consciousness, whereas patients with Miller Fisher...

P 112: Combining Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor (G-CSF) and Stem Cells in Treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is described as a situation in which the brain is damaged by an external force. It is considered to be a chief problem in health care. Pharmacotherapy and stem cell therapy are the main treatments used in TBI. The purpose of these procedures is to control the inflammation in injured regions of brain. Currently, there is no effective care for TBI that could regenerat...

Yet Another Atypical Presentation of Anti-GQ1b Antibody Syndrome

Variants of Guillain-Barre syndrome such as Bickerstaff encephalitis and Miller-Fisher syndrome have been reported. We report a 15-year-old boy who presented, after a prodromal illness, with 3-day progressive limb weakness, diplopia, and acute urinary retention. Clinically, he had horizontal gaze-evoked and upbeat nystagmus, bilateral extensor plantars in addition to quadriparesis and areflexia...
